The shield (18 inches in diameter) itself is made of two layers of domed concave buffalo rawhide and tied togetherwith buckskin thongs at intervals arround the edge, painted on the front. The back shows the natural brown epidermis. Attached is a shoulder strap of fringed brain tanned buckskin and a twisted thong arm loop.
The brain tanned buckskin cover is painted with trade pigments and hide scraping sizing. Thirteen black turkey feathers wrapped to buckskin thongs with sinew are attached to the edge of the cover. The tips of the feathers are decorated with red dyed horse hair and gypsum. Two stuffed buckskin bags, edged beaded with sinew, and a braid of sweet grass are tied to the hanging loop at the top of the shield.
