Pride: New Pulp Cards and New Pulp: The Blog

I am very excited to share with you my latest creative adventure: NEW PULP. This is my new business, started from the ground up in early March 2011, registered with the Ontario government and well on its way to being launched! The whole concept is about consciousness, of your surroundings and the impact you have on them. Based on this I've developed two parts of the business: one side is made of Greeting Cards made from recycled materials (books, posters, flyers, etc.), with crazy graphic designs on them. The business will run like the fashion industry, designing the cards in collections of 15, each with their own theme, and released in seasons (Spring, Summer, etc.). Also, each card is left blank intentionally - I'm not going to write a few phrases for you to sign your name under and pass off to your dearly beloved.

I believe in saying what you mean and not letting others speak for you, which leads to the other half of the project, New Pulp: The Blog. I really wanted an outlet for myself and other creative people to share their projects, musings and discoveries. So far we have approx. 15 authors and a few posts up already! The big launch for the card business and website is set for July 28th (also happens to be my birthday)- the party is at 7pm (location TBA). Should be a great night!

Sloth: FORESTS @ Tarragon Theatre

Ok, so this is a bit opposite to SLOTH, but I have found myself once again with three jobs (not including my new business)... It's at Tarragon Theatre, and for those of you not familiar, it's a great company in Toronto that produces original works through aiding playwrights from the inception of their stories with workshops and staging of their pieces. The outcome is usually well-crafted Canadian theatre (whatever that REALLY is...), and I am happy to be a part of their final show of the season: Forests. I may only be doing the laundry and some wardrobe maintenance, but I like the space and the people and who doesn't love a little extra money? The play is written by the same playwright that did SCORCHED (which was also turned into the film INCENDIES), and seems promising. Come see it.

BROOKLYN

I'm heading to Brooklyn in February! A little while ago I joined a Sketchbook project run by Arthouse Coop in Brooklyn. The basics are: you're sent a sketchbook, decide your theme from a list and "sketch" away, send the sketchbook back and have it tour across the US for a few months as a huge, international project. There are about 28, 000 artists that signed up this year! So now I'm heading to Brooklyn to check it out.

If you have suggestions for places to see and visit in New York, shoot them over. So far I have only a couple of guides to help me out. I'll be staying for a few nights so I'll have a lot of time to explore Brooklyn and maybe a bit of Manhattan.

Pride: Tea/Coffee Party Preview

As I'm sure some of you are aware, it's that time of the year again: 'tis the season for my semi-annual Tea and Coffee Party! This winter it will be held on Sunday, December 19th from 1pm - 5pm (drop by anytime). If you're really serious about attending I will give you my new address. This marks the 6th annual Winter Tea/Coffee Party, and the 12th semi-annual Tea/Coffee Party... I'm getting pretty serious about bouquets, TGFOPs and boldness now. This winter's "theme" is INDIA; below is a preview.

From Nectar: Fine Teas on Wellington Street in Ottawa comes a White tea from India: Assam Silver Needle. White and Green teas from India are pretty rare, the majority of tea estates in this region produce Black teas. The leaves are slightly rolled into tubes and the flavour is very subtle, but clear and refreshing (almost like a green tea). It was interesting to watch steep because the leaves were tightly rolled when the water was first poured over top and they floated up on the surface, but as the leaves softened, the air was released and they slowly sank to the bottom of the cup one by one like a little tea ballet.

This Hallowe'en Irene and I got all dressed up (I was a Dutch Milk Maid) and we went to Church street for a couple of hours to see everyone in their costumes. So much fun! Making our own costumes is very rewarding... next year is going to be crazy!

Pride: Kate Thornley's Artwork displayed at She Creeps

This past Friday I spent a lovely evening out with Guise (Jenn) and some other friends at my favourite store in Toronto, Function 13. They have a really great gallery space in the back, and this Friday was the opening of a show called She Creeps, featuring work from a few young women in Toronto. Kate Thornley (a good friend of mine) had three pieces in the show!
