Ondrej Pakan, from Myjava, Slovakia, captures stunning macro photos of bugs covered in tiny water droplets. The photographer, who specialises in capturing insects seconds after a downpour, said: "I get soaked waiting for the rain to finish, but it all seems worth it when you get really great shots of the insects with drops on them..."

This is the terrifying moment when a male grizzly bear charged a petrified group of sightseers in the Katmai National park in Alaska. The 10 tourists were hoping to view the bears hunting for salmon but suddenly they became the hunted as the the 40-stone predator charged them without warning. The men and women had little choice but to sit perfectly still while the lone bear came within inches of them. At one stage it even sniffed the hoodie of one member. Their guide advised the party not to jump up or run away as that would have prompted the fearsome creature to go on the attack and bring the trip to a grisly end. Instead it circled the group several times before wandering off when it lost interest.

Phil Hemsley sent us this picture, which he calls 'Aeon Flux'. He explains: "Post-sunset afterglow at Wembury Bay - looking towards the island known as the Mewstone - in the South Hams area of Devon, UK. The foreshore shows sections of Lower Devonian rocks - mainly red mudstones, now metamorphosed to slate, siltstones and sandstones which experienced Variscan deformation during the Permo-Triassic age. It is thought that they were originally laid down in mudflats and floodplains associated with lakes. Some fossil fish remains have been found here and there may have been an occasional connection between these lakes and the nearby sea.

A rocket flies through the aurora borealis after lifting off from the University of Alaska's Poker Flat Research Range near Fairbanks, Alaska. The mission was launched by a NASA funded group of 60 researchers studying electrical activity in the aurora borealis and the likelihood it is interfering with GPS and other signals. Cornell University says the 46-foot rocket sent back data as it flew through the aurora at an altitude of 217 miles.

A British photographer has captured the rare and beautiful aurora borealis shining brightly over an erupting volcano. Twenty five-year-old James Appleton from Cambridge has spent the past seven years capturing the volatile landscapes of Iceland.
