Cowan's Auction Items: Part Two

FREDERICK HUMPHRY/1776 ENGRAVED POWDER HORN. 12" length, engrailed edge and a double raised ring. Engraved with Fredrick Humphry junr. His Horn Made at Mount Independent Novembery AD 1776, Ticonder and Mountindepedent. Original wood plug with iron D-shaped ring in plug. 



Other engravings on the horn include a pine tree, a flowering plant and the shores of the lower end of Lake Champlain. On one shore is the label for Ticonderoga; the opposite shore shows "Mountindependent." The borders probably represent the lake shore as far as Humphrey's eye could see from the hill (at that time cleared of tree cover). On the Independence side are the horseshoe-shaped battery with the saw-tooth battery nearer on the shore and possibly one of the workshops. 




AMERICAN EAGLE HEAD SWORD. 33" curved blade with three fullers, brass handle and pieced cross guard with crude eagle head pommel. This sword has all of the characteristics of being made by Prahl; ca 1780-1800. 



KENTUCKY FLINTLOCK RIFLE.50 caliber smoothbore, 42" octagonal-to-round barrel, no markings on barrel, Lock marked Stafford Warranted. Brass patchbox, buttplate, triggerguard, sideplate, six silver inlays with a silver star inlayed on the cheek piece. Barrel held to stock by three wedges. Full curly maple stock with a slight Roman nose.






BRITISH REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA BRASS GORGET. With royal cipher of King George III.
